Grand Canyon National Park – North Rim, Arizona

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is over 8,000 feet in elevation and only gets 10% of all park visitors. Because of the altitude, the North Rim closes on October 15 to all traffic, including snow mobiles. It doesn’t open up until May 15. Point Imperial is accessible on the North Rim and is over 8,800 feet high (6,000 feet above the river.) The North Rim edge is further from the Colorado river because it is 1,200 feet higher than the south Rim and gets more precipitation, thus causing more erosion (12 feet of snow vs 5 feet on the south rim.) From Point Imperial, you can see the Painted Desert and the eastern end of the Grand Canyon.
