Perce Rock, Perce, Quebec
One of the world’s largest natural arches located in water, Perce Rock is 289 feet high. At the time of discovery by Jacques Cartier (1534), there were actually 3 arches but as around 300 tons of rock are lost to erosion each year, collapse is inevitable. The large column at the end is the last part of a second arch which collapsed in 1845. The limestone itself formed more than 400 million years ago during the Devonian.
Bonaventure Island, Perce, Quebec
Bonaventure Island is next to Perce Rock. One of the largest and most accessible bird sanctuaries in the world, it has more than 280,000 birds; more than 218 different species of birds have been recorded as visiting, migrating to, or living on Bonaventure island.
