Starved Rock State Park, Illinois is a wilderness area on the Illinois River. It’s known for its steep sandstone canyons formed by glacial meltwater. Several, including the St. Louis, French and Wildcat canyons, have waterfalls. The park’s 18 canyons feature vertical walls of moss-covered stone formed by glacial meltwater that slice dramatically through tree-covered sandstone bluffs. Cascade Falls is in Matthiesen Park which is contiguous.
The jumping fish in the Illinois river are Asian Carp which are an invasive species. They leap out of the water at the sound of a boat motor and hit people in the face. They can cause black eyes, broken bones, back injuries, and concussions.
