Wind River Canyon, Wyoming
Wind River is unusual in that it cuts across the mountains. Rivers usually flow down from the mountains. Wind River originally ran across flat terrain but about four million years ago an uplift of the earth’s crust in this region caused the river to cut this canyon. The rock in the canyon is from 235 million years old to several billion. The canyon is 14 miles long, 1.3 to 2 miles wide, and 2,400 feet at its deepest point.
