Sudbury Basin and the Very Large Tremendous Meteorite, Ontario
On the way to Killarney Provincial Park, I stopped at Sudbury, Ontario. Sudbury is on the south edge of a major geological structure caused by the second-largest known impact crater or astrobleme on Earth, as well as one of the oldest. Onaping Falls plunges 150 feet over the lip of what remains of the Sudbury Basin created at this time.

In comparison with the top ten strikes hitting Earth, this was number two and the asteroid strike that killed off the dinosaurs was number 8 – luckily there were only one celled organisms around when this one struck!

As a result of these metal deposits, the Sudbury area is one of the world’s major mining communities. The region is one of the world’s largest suppliers of nickel and copper ores. Most of these mineral deposits are found on the outer rim of the basin.
