Viking Trade Ship
Vikings have been associated with long boats and are well known to be good sailors. After their pillaging days they sailed trade ships like this replica patterned after a Knarr found in Denmark. The Knarr is 54 feet long, 16 feet wide, and 6 feet deep. It weighs only 12 tons but when loaded with ballast and crew it is 35 tons and still only draws 3 feet of water. This replica called the Snorri was actually sailed from Greenland to Newfoundland with a small crew in 1998. They had to sleep on the open deck since there were no cabins. Apparently, they put out a sea anchor at night and slept under a sail (wool in the original).
