Reconnaissance for the Gerstle Glacier Trip
In 1969, I joined a few guys to camp out overnight up the Gerstle River near where it is joined by July Creek. This creek runs down from one of the glaciers at the base of Mount Silvertip (there are many glaciers in these mountains).
The land was as close to a wilderness as I had ever seen. There was no sign that anyone had ever been there before. Not only was there no roads or fences or signs or trash, there was not even any old fire pits. The trails were made by moose, caribou and Dall Sheep and were similar to cow paths. That evening, I saw Dall Sheep in the Granite Mountains just north of us.
After we camped overnight, I hiked to the base of Gerstle Glacier, which was 4 miles away.
