Gerstle Glacier Trip – Day 2
To the base of the glacier (altitude ~ 2500 feet.)
As we approached the base of the glacier, two caribou were startled when they saw us from the terminal moraine of the glacier. Later we saw some Dall Sheep in a line on the cliff above our camp site.
We decided to stop at the base of the glacier after only hiking 6 miles since we had no idea what type of camping sites would be available on or around the glacier.
The creek had created a large ice arch in the glacier. For scale in the picture, I am next to a large chunk of ice at the bottom.
We camped next to a creek that came down from the east side. Two pictures show the creek in the evening and in the morning. The weather was clear that evening but foggy the next morning.
