Colorado National Monument, Colorado
Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West with gravity-defying boulders, tunnels carved of stone and red-rock canyons within a canyon.
But this treasure is much more than a monument. Towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. You can experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles.
Most of the rock formations are Mesozoic (Jurassic and Cretaceous) while the bed rock goes back to the PreCambrian (1.5 to 1.7 billion years old.)
This park reminds me of Zion. Erosion and sandstone lead to interesting topologies.
