The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore provides regionally diverse and unique plant communities. Over 800 plant species occur within the lakeshore, including Wisconsin listed endangered and threatened species. There also bird rookeries and wilderness areas on these islands.
National lakeshores are different than National Parks, Typically, hunting is allowed in national lakeshores but not in national parks. This was in response to treaties of Native Americans allowing hunting and fishing in certain areas.
The Apostle Islands are also known for their sea caves and Stockton Island is also known for its high concentration of black bears. Black Bears are very good swimmers.
