Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre, Manitoba
The museum currently houses the largest collection of marine reptile fossils in Canada.
During the Cretaceous period, much of Manitoba was covered by ocean. Plesiosaurs, some with short necks and some with long, were fish catchers par excellence. The terror of the sea in the middle Cretaceous were giant sharks that reached 25 feet – a modern great white only gets up to 15 feet. As Mososaurs evolved, they were first preyed on by these sharks but over time they turned the tables and became so large (up to 50 feet) that they had these sharks for lunch. They also shared the sea with squid that got up to 60 feet long.
