Twillingate, Newfoundland
Twillingate is a town of approximately 2100 people located on the Twillingate Islands in Notre Dame Bay, off the North Eastern shore of the island of Newfoundland, Canada. The region is known for its scenic, rugged coastline and its quiet and friendly atmosphere. Icebergs can be seen around the coastline in the summer months.
Long Point Lighthouse is one of the most photographed landmarks on the north east coast of Newfoundland. Long Point Light House was built out of brick (unusual) in 1857 and still has cracks in the walls from the earthquake of 1929 that caused a tsunami that killed 28 people and left hundreds homeless on the south coast.
The polar bear came down on an ice floe in the year 2000 and was killed in Twillingate. They would have tranquilized it but the effect is slow and the bear may still attack someone or try to swim and drown. For this reason they shoot the tranquilizer dart from a helicopter. A different bear that same year was tranquilized and transported back north.
