The east side of Minnesota borders the west side of Lake Superior. There are numerous waterfalls, agate rocks, the Split Rock Lighthouse, and historical Grand Portage. Pigeon Falls is in Grand Portage State Park.
Grand Portage National Memorial tells the story of the The Grand Portage which bypasses unnavigable portions of the Pigeon River and connects Fort Charlotte with Lake Superior, where thousands of tons of furs and materials were transported back and forth to Europe during colonial times. The North West Company (NWC) competed with Hudson Bay and actually did 70% of the pelt business (mostly beaver). They allowed their employees to marry into the local Anishinaabe which gave them an advantage.
