Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

Lava flows, eruptions, and earthquakes in 2018 closed a lot of trails in this park. Some are closed because they are too dangerous. For many years, hot lava has been visible in this park but the lava drained out in 2018 leaving a huge hole hundreds of feet deep. The lava we walked on to the Pu’u Huluhulu cinder cone flowed out in 1969 to 1974.

Road trip to see 2018 Lava Flows

Lava from the 2018 eruption was still very black. The lava is an unstoppable force since it is 30 feet high and has boulders the size of cars in it. It was surprising to see unburnt trees on top of the lava.
